my dad is hipper than I!

30 April 2009 ;13:11

so my dad is now officially hipper than I am! he has actually sent me a facebook invitation, asking me to sign up for a facebook account! I can't believe the day would actually come when my father has jumped onto the hip bandwagon earlier than me la, and I don't think he'll believe me when I say I don't have an account! he probably wants to spy on any incriminating photos we have on facebook haha.

and he's probably adding my sisters on facebook and maybe uploading embarrassing pictures of us naked when we were young and he was bathing us hahaha. so yes, if you see my dad on facebook, go ahead and befriend him on my behalf haha.

oh, I love my dad and how cute he gets sometimes.

cultural heritage outing!

28 April 2009 ;11:53

Outside ACM 1
so in our bid to become more culturally attuned, de ming and I went to the Kangxi Exhibition at the Asian Civilisation Museum! haha, didn't know de ming is such a cultural person, and actually he knows a whole lot about chinese heritage. haha, it was like walking around the museum with my own tour guide la.

ACM Sticker
and the good thing is that admission is free for full-time students! so you just have to flash your student card and you'll get the sticker haha. so it's a good way to spend a very humid afternoon! the exhibition was pretty amazing. there were inksticks with engravings, porcelain bowls and paintings of all sorts. but i think the most impressive paintings were these two scrolls that were 22m in length. the painters painted over 44m worth of city life to celebrate kangxi's birthday and all the people in the scrolls had different expressions! can you imagine the amount of detail and work that went into the scrolls!

ice cream @ ACM
and because it was so darn hot, we had ice-creams on the way to our next stop, the peranakan museum!

Photobucket
the peranakan museum is super near SMU haha, de ming and I nearly got lost because we didn't know how to walk. but just as we were panicking, we walked further down the School of Accountancy and ta-dah we saw the sign for the museum! haha, it's like only a 1min walk from SOA actually.

Photobucket
this is peranakan jewellery that they use in peranakan weddings. de ming was commenting that their items are a curious mix of Chinese and Malay cultures. the carvings are Chinese in style but the colours used reflect the Malay taste. that's why they have silver and brass ornaments and dark wood carvings in weddings haha.

Photobucket
and this is the kam cheng that they talked about in little nonya. the colours of this covered container struck me the first time I saw it haha, I think it was the nicest kam cheng I saw in the museum.

Photobucket
okay this is not a real pig's trotter haha, but they had it on display as part of the wedding gifts that are given by the groom to the bride's family in a peranakan wedding.

Photobucket
and of course, de ming wouldn't leave until he found the signboard that they used in little nonya. the words 'zuiyuan' actually summarise the words on the four boards at the side. basically, it means not to forget your roots when you become rich in the future. pretty meaningful actually but this was on display in the part on deaths in a peranakan family so this is actually part of the ancestral altar.

Photobucket
and then we had some fun with the statutes outside the museum!

Photobucket
haha, actually very hard to believe that de ming is already 25 years old can! he was the one that suggested all these weird poses la!

Photobucket
this must be the one day where the statute of the grandfather outside the museum becomes a hot photo-taking item haha.

Photobucket
and the statute they have of the cat is actually the ACM mascot! it's a really nice touch actually haha.

prata place
then met chris for dinner haha, and because we're still on budget mode, we went to a malay roadside eatery near his old school. which actually was a nice experience because we were right in front of the fan haha, so it was quite cooling.

b & w
haha, and then we were trying to get secret candid shots of each other and this is my best! i can't help it if he's constantly in an emo pose haha.

b & w 2
and I like this one! the background makes me feel as if it's in a foreign place :) and it's true, we look better in black-and-white haha. i think it's because black and white gets rid of all the noise and distractions in the background of the picture, and the picture comes out looking very quiet and peaceful which is what I like haha. okay, that's my theory only.

cottage pies cafe 1
and because I get hungry super fast, we went to the cottage pie cafe for dessert! I really like this place haha, it just has the right touch. now if we get rid of the taxi stand that's next to the cafe and add some quietness, it'll really be perfect haha.

THE OC: The Heartbreak

27 April 2009 ;11:30

// The OC S01E19 "The Heartbreak"

one of my favourite music scenes from the OC.

hmm, I've realised that staying at home doing nothing makes me think a lot. so I'm off for some cultural heritage time with de ming haha. this reminds me of chinese appreciation lessons in anglican high! will update on our trip when I get back haha.

we crash, we burn, we get up again.

23 April 2009 ;14:29

"Love is not a fight, but it is worth fighting for."
//gotwisdom

the weather lately has been so darn hot, it's unbelievable lah. even while I was packing my room, I was perspring like crazy haha, I had to switch on all the fans in every room so that it was cool enough when I went in. haha, but so far haven't used the aircon yet, I'm like used to life without the aircon already.

went to causeway point for the first time yesterday while waiting for chris to get off work. and ohmytian, its like so different from what I've heard can. haha, I've been tricked la! yensun keeps telling me that woodlands is a very ulu place and nobody goes there blah blah that's why it's called woodlands etc. so i was expecting the mrt station to be very deserted and quiet. but when I got off, it was SUPER CROWDED! there were like so many people! and the mall was pretty happening, lots of students hanging out there haha.

ya so I should hang out more in the north, it looks more happening than the east haha.

had a simple dinner because he was rushing home to watch american idol haha, personally I can't wait for harper's island on sunday! anyway, watched backstreet boys live in orlando afterwards haha. backstreet boys reminds me of when Huili and I were young and we did all sorts of crazy stuff together like bathing in ice water on hot days haha.

and managed to have a good talk about lots of stuff that was on my mind actually.

it's like when you play a computer game. unless you miss a shot or you shoot some innocent passerby, you're in control of your lives. so what other people say, think or do won't kill you, but you take a hit anyway. but it's okay, we crash, we burn, we hurt some then we get up again.

end of exams!

;10:14

"The more studying you did for the exam, the less sure you are as to which answer they want."
//the Second Law of Applied Terror

exams are finally finally over, this term has been pretty tough but I'm so glad the holidays are here! haha, the last exam was contract law and like at 1130, I could feel everybody wanting to abandon their paper and just leave the exam hall or okay, at least I felt that way haha. I really detest all the SOGA questions where you have to apply the Act in order to calculate damages, I mean let's just use common sense! anyway, I didn't study SOGA properly so I just took the market price of whatever goods and multiply by the amount bought haha, okay I knew something was abit off but I was like oh heck it, I just hope the prof doesn't feel like burning my paper when she sees it!

went for lunch with liru, clarissa and chee cheong at thai express and it was pretty funny cos we all became so indecisive after the exams la. haha, we changed our orders like 4 or 5 times and the waitress kept giggling at us. after that, went to chill at starbucks with liru and clarissa where we really had an opportunity to share stuff and catch up. and I learnt that I'm really blessed to have family who are around, who love me and a guy that always puts me first. having such blessings around makes you think the world works like that when it doesn't, so not taking anything for granted!

went out for lunch with huixiang, jojo and emmanuel at manhattan's fish market on tuesday haha (by special request okay, not that I was trying to be a lightbulb). then we went to the library to help out with some research that hx and jojo were doing for their pro bono work. I realise it's really hard to think of someone who has been accused of a crime as 'innocent until proven guilty' because the law system in Spore is pretty pro-plaintiff IMO. and it's also hard to draw the line between yourself and your clients. how much do you sympathesise? too much and you're too emotionally involved. too little and you risk reducing real life people and events to words on a page, a problem that needs to be solved. yes, there's much more to being a lawyer than I thought.

anyway, went to art friend to look for materials and scrap cloth. since I'm going to be bumming at home most of the time, I was thinking I should start on some craft tutorials hahaha since the end-products I saw were so amazing. haha, on the way there, chris was telling me that he's on his way back to the office already. okay, so i was browsing paper in art friend and suddenly someone asks, "can I help you with anything?" and the next thing i knew, chris was there la! haha he's so sweet sometimes but i was super surprised can! I even like blinked twice before I realised it was him haha. and then we had macs at the outlet in bras basah.

the last time I was there was with my LTB group-mates and now they've renovated it COMPLETELY. it's one of the best macs I've ever been to la. they have lots of sofa seats and sitting areas for two people. so there were tons of people studying there. haha, long time since I've been to mac without books for mugging. but we had a good time just chatting and having fries haha.

you know how people are supposed to be 3-D? as in, when you get to know them, they are not flat but they are vibrant and alive. for some people, you can only get to know their 1-D or 2-D selves because you can't handle who they actually are. and that's okay, that's why some people can only be mere acquaintances. but as I come to know you more, I love who you are and I love all the layers that you have and don't show.

haha I love doing all these analogies, reminds of me of ashin's onion song.

and yes, I absolutely love the holidays! can't wait to go baking, kboxing and shopping :)

thirty days and counting

13 April 2009 ;09:31

"The telephone singing ringing it's too early don't pick it up,
we don't need to we got everything we need right here, and everything we need is enough
just so easy when the whole world fits inside of your arms
do we really need to pay attention to the alarm?
wake up slow, mmm mmm wake up slow"
//Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson
we had an indoor one-month celebration. kfc chicken. one bad movie. each other.
and that's all I need really. I don't need fancy stuff, expensive food, ambience lighting.
all I need is you.

american breakfasts

12 April 2009 ;16:40

"My body is like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I don't think about it, I just have it."

err, the quote has nothing to do with the entry but it just made me laugh so hard haha.
anyway, a while back already, but I remember wanting to talk about this awesome breakfast we had a few weeks ago. it was so good that for a while, I remember waking up and craving to be an American. or have an American chef in my house or something.

and but here's the best breakfast I've had in months :) after eating this I weighed myself and realised that my weight shifted one digit upwards haha, super scary american breakfasts! hmm, but the pancakes and the bacon is amazing. especially the pancakes, they taste different from the macdonald's ones and they're thicker haha. okay, that's also why they are more expensive :)
and we had fried potato skins for appetisers some more. at least i managed to finish 3/4 of my food okay. he couldn't even finish half of the food on his plate haha.
it's always awesome to have good food and good company. and it also sort of links in with the project my sister's doing now, on eating disorders. apparently in a survey done by some British mag, almost every teenage girl is unhappy with her body. 1 out of 5 are so unhappy that they suffer from anorexia or bulimia. and out of those surveyed, 78% want to lose weight.
oh girls, love yourself and let loose. this breakfast is enough to destroy anyone's dieting plans but who cares? people who love you wouldn't care about how you look :)

sushi tei lunch!

4 April 2009 ;18:32

"Happiness does not come from doing easy work but from the afterglow of satisfaction that comes after the achievement of a difficult task that demanded our best."
//Theodore I. Rubin

yay and the big, bad moots is FINALLY OVER. you cannot imagine the stress, the pain and the sheer torture of preparing for it but the moment when we were standing at the podium, and we knew exactly what to say to the judges when they shot questions at us made it all worth it. it's really really awesome that jojo (and justice vik!) were there all the way throughout the moots. really don't know what i would have done without them :)

and we celebrated by having dinner at ikea with chris and K-BOX the next day! haha, it really felt like a great burden off our hearts laa. i actually went to sleep thinking about how to answer a question about martha's television screen and woke up the next day with the answer hahaha.

and then we had the free much-anticipated lunch with prof at sushi tei! the funniest thing was that the day before, jojo was troubled over what to wear to the lunch hahaha. then while we were shopping at far east, i saw the perfect top and she was saying nooo nooo lor, i'm not going to wear it tmr. and ta-dah the next day, she's wearing it for the lunch la. tsk tsk, jojo, haha.
but i'm really happy with my first mooting experience! and most of all, i'm just glad that it's all over :)
