love in the small things.

13 July 2014 ;02:51

Museum love by Michael Knudsen500px.com

"She did not need much. Wanted very little. A kind word, sincerity, fresh air, clean water, a garden, kisses, books to read, sheltering arms, a cosy bed and to love and be loved in return."
//Starra Neely Blade

And when I'm with you, you open up my eyes to show me that love and contentment can actually be very simple. That joy can be found in a cosy, lazy cafe on a Saturday evening sharing life over coffee, fries and pasta. That unadulterated excitement can exist in dodging shoppers along the noisy, bustling alleys of Little India and Mustafa Centre. That love can steep and stew over an accidental ninety-minute bus journey of epic proportions, starting from a lonely bus terminal at st michael's and ending up right back where we started.

Maybe it's been unknowingly inculcated in us to expect the grandiose, the glittering and the glamorous from our relationships. Maybe it's in every k-drama, every love song, every movie that we've watched and unknowingly grown to expect in our own lives.

But again and again, you show me that love is both simpler and deeper than that. That it's in your willingness to spend dinnertime explaining the finer aspects of audit work to a completely confused amateur, in your protective shadow hovering right behind me as we navigate the swarming side-alleys of Little India, in your unwavering resolute to stay awake and entertain me on the extremely long bus journey home.

And in all these little things, time and time again, I come back to the same conclusion. That God's choice for me is always incomparably good and he will never allow me to doubt Him or you.

anniversary.

1 April 2014 ;00:19

This has been a post that's long overdue but I really wanted to sit down and blog about it properly so that I will remember every lovely detail and thing we did. So here it is, our first anniversary celebration!

I started off not having much expectations about the anniversary celebration, mostly because UU is quite a chillaxed and spontaneous person so I didn't know whether he had put much thought into the planning haha. On that day itself, he told me that we would meet early but we ended up meeting around 12pm. Haha but the wait was all worth it when he pulled up to my place in this little red ride! Apparently he had gotten it so we could drive around Singapore the whole day :)

And a bigger and lovelier surprise was waiting for me when I popped in - the prettiest bouquet of flowers I've ever gotten was waiting for me on the front seat! Haha to be honest, this is only the second time I've gotten flowers from him. And while I'm not really a flowers kinda girl, I think it's a really sweet gesture that really touched me :) With that, we headed off to our favourite changi village to get some brunch!

We decided to visit Jacob's Cafe, a Christian restaurant that I've always wanted to try! It's tucked away in a little corner, and on the weekends it feels like the perfect place to chill. They serve such hearty breakfasts! Don't be fooled by the size of the portions on the plate, I was super full by my third piece of toast haha.

After a hearty brunch, we decided we needed to exercise haha. Being very spontaneous (aka make no plans), we decided since it was hot, it would be good to go bowling in an air-con place and ended up driving down to tampines safra!

Haha but as we haven't bowled in such a longgg time, we were really such noobs compared to the bowling pros in the lanes next to us! Some more we had to take a break in between after the first game cos we felt quite exhausted haha. We ended up people-watching in the rest area afterwards, watching some primary school students training and they were really good! Doing curve balls and everything while we were just struggling to ensure our balls didn't end up in the gutters haha.

After the workout, we headed to melba cafe which is tucked away in a quiet corner of goodman road! The place is really nice and chill and we managed to have some cakes and tea to settle our growling tummies! After that, we also took a short walk around the area to just ooh and aah at some of the lovely terrace houses that lined the streets. Haha not that we were ever hoping to buy a house here, but it was just nice to stroll and fantasise together :)

After the afternoon break, we headed to east coast for our favourite Jap food - sushi tei! Wheeee! Even though the place was kinda crowded, we managed to snag two seats at a quiet corner of the counter where we could eat our food in peace and do some people-watching!

Finallyyyy, it was time for present giving! Haha my present was a set of couple watches which I had sneakily sought his opinion on a few weeks before! And amazingly, his present was spot on - a cross necklace matching the one that he already wears around his neck! Haha what a lovely surprise :)

After present giving, we headed to marina barrage for the final event of the night - chilling and star gazing! All in all, it was a wonderful anniversary, way beyond what I could have planned or imagined. Thank you for loving me, for taking care of me, for always being mine. You are more than what I could ever dream or hope for. And I look forward to many, many more years with you. Thank God for you, thank God for us.

sans souci.

27 February 2012 ;21:37

"It's just that you're about to do something out of the ordinary. And after you do something like that, the everyday look of things might seem to change a little. Things may look different to you than they did before. But don't let appearances fool you. There's always only one reality."
//Haruki Murakami; 1Q84

Mm, really enjoyed the time spent today. Had time to eat the famous bak kut teh at the blk 416 coffeeshop, get coconut buns from the traditional bakery next door and try out the new (to me, apparently it's been there for 3 years already) manicure shop next to the pet shop. Also had time to stop by the library, read through last week's Korean notes in the open study room and finally got to borrow David Mitchell's latest novel. Then had dinner at my grandmother's and had the chance to drive the car back. Of course, parking was still the most #%@#! frustrating experience of the whole journey and I had to let a few cars go by first with my car sticking awkwardly half out of the parking lot, but I promise to learn how to do it properly even if it kills me, damnit.

I won't say that I wished all my days could pass me lazily by like this. Because I know that it's only when we have those other crazy busy times that we learn to appreciate the times where everything slows down and gets ready for the end.

obtuse.

25 February 2012 ;23:49

"Time for you and time for me,
And time yet for a hundred indecisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions,
Before the taking of a toast and tea."
//T.S. Eliot; The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock

It was unexplainable and inexplicable, even to myself. But all it took was a moment and you understood, completely. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. That must be wisdom. It spoke directly to the things on my heart and unknotted something that had been growing for a while. I know that in and of itself, the sentiment was probably not mistaken or imprecise, in fact it may even have been spot on. But it just made me vaguely uncomfortable and upset for some reason. And I know that it was probably not meant to be taken this way, but that's what careless words do and sometimes we ourselves don't even know how powerful they can be. All in all, I will not allow something like that to get me down again. I've come too far and fallen too often for that and it would be starting over from scratch for things to go down this path again.

I will build you up and you will be rebuilt, this is what I hold on to. So for now, I'm done with this conversation.

eight again.

8 October 2011 ;23:51

"There’s always another storm. It’s the way the world works. Snowstorms, rainstorms, windstorms, sandstorms, and firestorms. Some are fierce and others are small. You have to deal with each one separately, but you need to keep an eye on whats brewing for tomorrow."
//Maria V. Snyder; Fire Study

I didn't have a totally awesome or super chillax week eight. Afterall, this is life in SMU haha. But on the whole, I enjoyed the time I had to catch up on some stuff that's been on my backlog forever and I got some free time to feed my growing kpop addiction as well hahaha! But the highlight has got to be thursday, where we had a superamazing Japanese lunch, watched a really silly movie and had the time to catch up with people we haven't seen in a while. I think I can stay high on the awesomeness of that day and use a little bit of it to tide me through the rest of the term. Now, back to work!

muffins.

14 September 2011 ;00:34

I am officially in deep, desperate, drowning love with the Amoy Street coffeshop muffins. They are just dying to be eaten. And I can't stop. I just had one chocolate chip with tea while mugging and now I'm craving all the blueberry ones which are not for me and when I don't even like blueberries in the first place. How, oh how can Edmund's Cafe even begin to compare with this awesomeness!

run here.

16 August 2011 ;01:16

"Something new, they had said. They had a perfect day for it. A day with the blue and gold good weather of anyone's primitive childhood expectations, when the new, brief memory tells itself that this is what is, and therefore was, and therefore will be. A good day to see a new place."
//AS Byatt; Possession

In a moment, we will have used it all away. But for now, we can hold on together in canteens and cafes with conversations and heartohearts, pretending that we still have all the time in the world. Soon, even quicker than soon, we will come to the point where we stand on our own, but for now, for now, we are here and all other those times are running somewhere else.

chinese new year!

20 February 2010 ;23:33

after years of eating out or going to people's house to sponge on their new year spread, my parents decided to cook our CNY meals this year!

Photobucket
so they decided to start with something simple like prawn noodles which was really not bad, the soup was really pretty good!

Photobucket Photobucket
okay technically steam boat doesn't really count as cooking but at least there's the fun of dunking the food into hot water and waiting for it to come to boil haha.

Photobucket
and my dad takes his job of arranging the food in an asthetically pleasing manner really seriously.

Photobucket
the challenge of the whole thing was the bak kut teh! even though apparently it's quite easy to make since supermarkets sell the instant buk ket teh soup mix and all you have to do is boil the pork for a few hours.

Photobucket Photobucket
awesome is all I can say :D

christmas '09!

26 December 2009 ;23:02

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
//John 3:16

our 2D christmas tree!lightss

thank you for friends, morning to afternoon intimate gatherings, senseless talk, lame-assed jokes, egg tarts made with love, defrosted meatballs from Ikea, tomyam beehoon and pepper sausages.

thank you for family, warmth, love, reminiscing, sharing love and heartache stories, telling the truth, cousins, comfort, carolling, strength to go on, turkey ham, lamb with sauce, orange punch, red wine, homemade log cake (by me!), rowdiness, noise, gifts, the most amazing game of pictionary.

thank you for being with me every step of the way and loving me by giving me the most precious gift of life.

Merry merry Christmas, I hope your Christmas was blessed !

feimao dim sum lunch!

26 July 2009 ;19:01

"Consciousness is a light directed outwards, it lights up the way ahead of us so that we don't stumble. It's like the headlights on the front of a locomotive - turn them inward and you'd crash."
//Boris Pasternak; Dr Zhivago

Photobucket Photobucket
my family on my dad's side is kinda obsessed with having dim sum! we've been having dim sum lunches for 3 weeks straight already, cant keep count of the no. of char siew baos I've had keke. this time, went to fei mao at chinatown point. had lots of dim sum but only managed to take pics of 3 durian balls before everything was eaten up la. apparently, the kimchi here is super nice cos my sisters kept eating kimchi cucumbers instead of proper food.

Photobucket Photobucket
and the coconut dessert is pretty special cos they have some sort of pudding with ice-cream mixed with the coconut flesh inside. my sister kept trying to entice me to eat but urghh not my kind of sweet haha, I'd rather have thick, warm chocolate brownies!

feimao food!
a good three hours later - the savage aftermath!

Photobucket Photobucket
and our only male cousin, calebeee! he's darn adorable cos he can speak now but it's super hard to catch him smiling in a photo cos babies move so fast!

Photobucket more camwhoring at feimaocamwhoring at feimao
and us camwhoring, trying out the 4 snapshot functions thingie on my sister's camera haha. but the quality sucks cos it moves between 4 frames super fast, its damn hard to capture the expressions!

more or less, things have been settled. I think the good thing out of it all is that I learnt that my actions have repercussions on other people, whether I mean it or not. so even now, I regret a little what I've been feeling and the result it's led to. I know that it was fortunate that the small flames were put out before they burned down everything, but in the process of firefighting, people have still been hurt and stressed and now I'm worried about other stuff. love can be hard as sticks and stones sometimes, we just have to ride the rough patch out.

let God provide, I know, I will remind myself of that.

happy birthday, peiyi!

9 July 2009 ;10:43

"Little girls! I am in the business of putting old heads on young shoulders, and all my pupils are the creme de la creme. Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life."
//Muriel Spark; The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

in getting to holland v last night to celebrate peiyi's 20th birthday, it was really like a drama serial lah. first, we had to lug the card to orchard mrt and cos I didn't put enough glue on the felt, we had to keep the letters from falling. second, we couldn't find sam at the mrt cos it was fricking crowded. third, on the bus we got off at the wrong stop cos i mixed up the stops haha. so we took the bus back to holland v. and in the end, while searching for olio cafe, we realised that it doesn't exist!

py with her card!
oh well, so we ended up at breko cafe instead haha. but it was a good choice because breko has really generous portions for the price! and this is peiyi with her huge card!

Photobucket

after dinner, we ended up at haagen daz to cut cake and sing the birthday song in korean! obviously cos py is obessed with korean drama now and she's always dressed korean-style haha.

jojo and py!
jojo and py with the back of the birthday card! jojo kept hinting that it was very nice, very nicely done ah huimin, haha don't worry, we all got the hint for november :)

the bday cake! many hands!

the birthday cake! sadly, it collapsed a little on the side because of the awful heat so it looked like the leaning tower of pisa. but we managed to prop it up with a fork so it still looks presentable! and because we were sitting under a fan, we had a bloody hard time trying to light the candle and keep it lighted during the whole birthday song!

blowing out! wish making!
can you see all the hands trying to protect the birthday flame? and at last, peiyi manages to make her 3 very long birthday wishes haha!

py, me and rach! py, me and jojo!
happy people at the end of the birthday celebration! even though we had a hard time getting there, it was really worth it in the end, for the food, the friends, the fun!

CSY treats us to FOOD

1 July 2009 ;12:00

Soon after, I heard sensei call, "Mikage! Are you awake? It's snowing, look! It's snowing!"
"I'm coming!" I called out, standing up. I got dressed to begin another day.
Over and over, we begin again.

//Kitchen; Banana Yoshimoto

I'm sure prof's camera is a highclass, professional, expensive one but I'm not sure why it squares the jaws of people in the photo. okayy, maybe it's just a bad angle. a very badddd one. but anyway, he treated us to japanese ala carte buffet at the odeon towers ytd, extremely generous! as one who will not make light of his generosity, I ate at least 12 pieces of ebi sushi. ebi has officially replaced tamago as my sushi of choice. if one day there is no more rice left in the world, I know I can subsist on prawns alone. morning, day and night hoho. until nicholas looks over at all the seafood on our plates and says, wow we're like systematically decimating sealife. lolpie, that's why God gave us sealife cann! we're helping them fulfil their purposes in life! then had a fun kbox session with jojo, py and samantha at suntec. i believe py is the only one who will attempt to sing boom boom pow at kbox hahaha but it was entertaining lah. and to round it all off, dinner at fish&Co plus rachel and a long chat at the end.

and as a reminder that school is starting soon, BOSS bidding starts next monday. not enough time to do all the things I want to do. but, at least baking is coming up soon!

oh and my sister just showed me this cna poll about opening school. haha this is ridiculous, I bet the 92% is made of desperate ppl like my sister who haven't finished studying for her JCTs. hmm, I wonder if unis are counted inside this keep schools closed thing.
