peranakan museum outing!

27 July 2009 ;22:56

"He would never see the world through anyone else's eyes again. But more than that, anything he might love and believe from now on would come from himself, and no one else."
//Irene Nemirovsky; Suite Francaise

by request of jojo and py, I paid another visit to the peranakan museum! and we had lots of fun playing with the stuff inside haha.

outside the museum 2!
py and jojo with a shot outside the museum!

outside the museum!

py and I with the old man and small girl again!

old phones! playing with the old phones!
us playing with those ancient phone displays they have! apparently you pick up and you get to hear how the peranakans talked among themselves in the past. haha, but the accents are all very singlish so its abit unreal.

peranakan dining ware!
old peranakan dining ware! the thing about peranakans is that they are very into florals and colour, the whole dining table is full of pink flower dishes la.

at the museum's doors!

and us, at the end of the museum tour!

after that, we watched murderer starring aaron kwok at the cathay. ohmytian, it was BAD. so BAD in the really awful sense. don't watch it, you'll just be wasting your money haha!

feimao dim sum lunch!

26 July 2009 ;19:01

"Consciousness is a light directed outwards, it lights up the way ahead of us so that we don't stumble. It's like the headlights on the front of a locomotive - turn them inward and you'd crash."
//Boris Pasternak; Dr Zhivago

Photobucket Photobucket
my family on my dad's side is kinda obsessed with having dim sum! we've been having dim sum lunches for 3 weeks straight already, cant keep count of the no. of char siew baos I've had keke. this time, went to fei mao at chinatown point. had lots of dim sum but only managed to take pics of 3 durian balls before everything was eaten up la. apparently, the kimchi here is super nice cos my sisters kept eating kimchi cucumbers instead of proper food.

Photobucket Photobucket
and the coconut dessert is pretty special cos they have some sort of pudding with ice-cream mixed with the coconut flesh inside. my sister kept trying to entice me to eat but urghh not my kind of sweet haha, I'd rather have thick, warm chocolate brownies!

feimao food!
a good three hours later - the savage aftermath!

Photobucket Photobucket
and our only male cousin, calebeee! he's darn adorable cos he can speak now but it's super hard to catch him smiling in a photo cos babies move so fast!

Photobucket more camwhoring at feimaocamwhoring at feimao
and us camwhoring, trying out the 4 snapshot functions thingie on my sister's camera haha. but the quality sucks cos it moves between 4 frames super fast, its damn hard to capture the expressions!

more or less, things have been settled. I think the good thing out of it all is that I learnt that my actions have repercussions on other people, whether I mean it or not. so even now, I regret a little what I've been feeling and the result it's led to. I know that it was fortunate that the small flames were put out before they burned down everything, but in the process of firefighting, people have still been hurt and stressed and now I'm worried about other stuff. love can be hard as sticks and stones sometimes, we just have to ride the rough patch out.

let God provide, I know, I will remind myself of that.

chocolate cake

22 July 2009 ;21:05

“When was the last time you wanted to say it all to the right person? To have it all come out right, to surprise yourself at how together you could be. When was the last time you ever met someone who made you want to give it all to them? I mean give yourself to them. Where you couldn't express yourself enough - like you wanted to cut off one of your arms to be understood. That's it - you would cut your head off to have someone understand you. You know how pointless that one is. You know how many times you've smashed yourself to bits on the rocks.”
//Henry Rollins

today, most definitely, wasn't the greatest. the sky was awfully grey and it was whipping cold wind and rain from the moment I woke up. luckily for lunch, we had an enormous bratwurst pizza and awesome chocolate cake at nydc. I checked and realised that we had this about a month ago also haha! no wonder vicks keeps insisting that my arms are fatter ugh. the consolation is that when the new school terms starts (in less than 3 scary weeks) can lose weight damn quickly also. pft, kind of pissed but don't know who to vent it all on. also super tired from lugging all that stuff around which I didn't get to use. happily though, we managed to get a pair of shoes each! yeah I know retail therapy is a cheap thrill, but it's better than nothing huh.

oh chéri vous êtes venu à la maison!

and when you opened the door, for a moment it was like you never even went away. from start to finish, lightning ripped and thunder roared and stars were flashing in the dark. okay, that's because they are glow in the dark stickons. but it took my breath away. quite frankly, I love who we are when we are around us.

and today too, damnit. that's why I'm still up drinking my cup of sweet tea as slowly as possible to make it last for a few more minutes while I wait for the ringing to start.

"Loneliness as a situation can be corrected but as a state of mind, it is an incurable disease."
//Valdimir Nakabov

headed out to bedok with jojo ytd to complete the surveys for our CIP and damn, I think we've been cheated by them. haha, what own time own target, at the rate that we're finding the houses, it's going to take forever just to get 100 addresses la. but oh well, we saw a side of singapore that we don't see often when they're touting f1 races, ion orchards and IRs. a few of the addresses were actually 1-room flats with very warm and welcoming aunties who told us a bit of their life story while we were trying to do the survey and there were two car-washing uncles who gave us wrong directions were very helpful! but we walked until we just wanted to collapse la, cos all the HDB blocks are arranged weirdly. like 17, 18, 19 then cannot find blk 20 or even worse, we get to the right block but the lift doesn't go to the flat cos it's divided into two sides. so you must walk one whole round just to get to the other side haha. well, at least we had a fun time using jojo's huge pink umbrella and chitchatting all the way.

then rushed all the way to lido with mogu to watch the premiere of harry potter and the half-blood prince. free tickets and free chocs from cadbury ! haha, but I was so sweaty and hungry cos no time for dinner, in the end we just snacked on subway cookies. hmm, but cos both of us don't read the book, we didn't know what the heck was going on half the time. and there's lot of teen romance in this part la which was abit boring I think, not as action-packed as the last time. and after the movie, we got a happy meal to go cos I was so damn hungry!

and on wed, managed to get complimentary tickets to watch sunshine cleaning. it's a good movie though I think they didn't tie up some of the loose ends. amy adams and emily blunt are both awesome actresses! spoiler alert, but there's this amazing scene where nora (emily blunt) goes trestling and she sticks her face right below the railway track. and as the train thunders past, she's screaming with joy but there's tears running down her face, I thought it was a really good scene. the first movie that I cried properly at (real tears with awkward groping in the dark for a tissue) since Infernal Affairs haha.

all in all, it's been an upandown week. had fun hanging out at chinatown with rach looking for vintage charms, going back to tjc with wl & sy for comfort food, strolling arab street and haji lane with mogu and spending nothing to watch two movies! trying my best to be occupied all the time, but still waking up at weird times for no reason at all with heartpangs. which makes me tired in the morning, and spoils my plan to get rid of eyebags!

come back soon, the sun doesn't shine as bright when you're not around.

happy birthday, peiyi!

9 July 2009 ;10:43

"Little girls! I am in the business of putting old heads on young shoulders, and all my pupils are the creme de la creme. Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life."
//Muriel Spark; The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

in getting to holland v last night to celebrate peiyi's 20th birthday, it was really like a drama serial lah. first, we had to lug the card to orchard mrt and cos I didn't put enough glue on the felt, we had to keep the letters from falling. second, we couldn't find sam at the mrt cos it was fricking crowded. third, on the bus we got off at the wrong stop cos i mixed up the stops haha. so we took the bus back to holland v. and in the end, while searching for olio cafe, we realised that it doesn't exist!

py with her card!
oh well, so we ended up at breko cafe instead haha. but it was a good choice because breko has really generous portions for the price! and this is peiyi with her huge card!

Photobucket

after dinner, we ended up at haagen daz to cut cake and sing the birthday song in korean! obviously cos py is obessed with korean drama now and she's always dressed korean-style haha.

jojo and py!
jojo and py with the back of the birthday card! jojo kept hinting that it was very nice, very nicely done ah huimin, haha don't worry, we all got the hint for november :)

the bday cake! many hands!

the birthday cake! sadly, it collapsed a little on the side because of the awful heat so it looked like the leaning tower of pisa. but we managed to prop it up with a fork so it still looks presentable! and because we were sitting under a fan, we had a bloody hard time trying to light the candle and keep it lighted during the whole birthday song!

blowing out! wish making!
can you see all the hands trying to protect the birthday flame? and at last, peiyi manages to make her 3 very long birthday wishes haha!

py, me and rach! py, me and jojo!
happy people at the end of the birthday celebration! even though we had a hard time getting there, it was really worth it in the end, for the food, the friends, the fun!

jesus, take the wheel

5 July 2009 ;08:36

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away."
//1 Corinthians 13:7-9

God, wise as He is, probably knew the trials and tribulations that would afflict those who are on Earth. Maybe that's why He dedicated a chapter in Corinthians to talking about love. Why does it always protect, always trust, always hope, always perserve? Because danger comes its way, doubt fills its heart, despair tries to overcome it and trials plague it. But after today's sermon, I realised that maybe I have too high expectations. I expect things to work the way I want them to and when they don't, I get discouraged easily. I'm anxious, worried and overly emotional when I'm usually not. So today I was reminded of several things, we must be aware of what things come from Him and what doesn't. So all the negative stuff that I've been allowing to take over at times is something that I seriously need to stop. And most important of all, surrender it all to Him, my life, my future, my studies, my relationships, my family, my emotions, let Him take control. Because He will not test you beyond what you can take, but in all the testing, He will lead you to the way out.

At the end, what SP said really spoke to me. He asked if there were those who had been worrying or anxious over a situation in their life, that they've prayed about it and sought advice but it doesn't seem to help. And he added that these people may know God's promises in their head but in their hearts, they don't feel it and they've been letting the problem affect their lives, losing sleep and feeling awful about it. Right there and then, I knew. So today, I allowed Him to take the wheel instead and let go of all that stuff I've been carrying about. Allow it to go once and for all and to trust in what I've been blessed with.

baking with my mogu!

4 July 2009 ;18:51

"Love blurs your vision; but after it recedes, you can see more clearly than ever. It's like the tide going out, revealing whatever's been thrown away and sunk: broken bottles, old gloves, rusting pop cans, nibbled fishbodies, bones. This is the kind of thing you see if you sit in the darkness with open eyes, not knowing the future. The ruin you've made."
//Magaret Atwood; Cat's Eye

my mogu and I went baking last friday!
us !
us before the baking started! surprisingly, there were quite a few people our age haha. got a group of well-dressed girls and a small boy with his sister. but I think the teacher was the funniest la, he looks super pro and he even got time to bake a pizza for us to try after the whole lesson.

choc and cream mixing chocolate!

this is cream with chocolate emulsion, you stir it for a while and it becomes good, creamy chocolate haha.

my baking mogu!
and my mogu stirring the cream! what I learnt is that baking requires copious amounts of arm power. even while we were not using the industrial mixer, the teacher made us stir bowls and bowls of stuff. we had to whisk the eggs into a froth then we had to stir the macademias into the cream and after it all, we have to add all the stuff together and mix it well. haha, if you don't have time to work out, go for a baking class la, guaranteed toned biceps after all that stirring and whisking!

nearly there!

and these were our cakes before they went into the oven!

finished cake!

haha, the finished product! we made a walnut pound cake also but that one not as sexy as this awesome chocolate macademia cake! all in all, baking is super good fun especially when you don't have much to do. but if you really want to take up baking, it's super expensive cos I was checking out the prices of the baking equipment and I think you'll have to spend at least a hundred plus to get all the basic stuff haha. maybe should just stick to making cookies first la huh.

I just wish the cakes would last long enough so I could give them out to all the people I love.

CSY treats us to FOOD

1 July 2009 ;12:00

Soon after, I heard sensei call, "Mikage! Are you awake? It's snowing, look! It's snowing!"
"I'm coming!" I called out, standing up. I got dressed to begin another day.
Over and over, we begin again.

//Kitchen; Banana Yoshimoto

I'm sure prof's camera is a highclass, professional, expensive one but I'm not sure why it squares the jaws of people in the photo. okayy, maybe it's just a bad angle. a very badddd one. but anyway, he treated us to japanese ala carte buffet at the odeon towers ytd, extremely generous! as one who will not make light of his generosity, I ate at least 12 pieces of ebi sushi. ebi has officially replaced tamago as my sushi of choice. if one day there is no more rice left in the world, I know I can subsist on prawns alone. morning, day and night hoho. until nicholas looks over at all the seafood on our plates and says, wow we're like systematically decimating sealife. lolpie, that's why God gave us sealife cann! we're helping them fulfil their purposes in life! then had a fun kbox session with jojo, py and samantha at suntec. i believe py is the only one who will attempt to sing boom boom pow at kbox hahaha but it was entertaining lah. and to round it all off, dinner at fish&Co plus rachel and a long chat at the end.

and as a reminder that school is starting soon, BOSS bidding starts next monday. not enough time to do all the things I want to do. but, at least baking is coming up soon!

oh and my sister just showed me this cna poll about opening school. haha this is ridiculous, I bet the 92% is made of desperate ppl like my sister who haven't finished studying for her JCTs. hmm, I wonder if unis are counted inside this keep schools closed thing.
